Where do I start with this topic... Hell, welcome to the first blog post, LETS TALK ABOUT IT!
When I do consultations with my patients, some come to the consultation telling me they've never had a set of dentures in their whole life. Then, I always ask this question in my head,
"How have you been eating? How have you been talking?" Yet, they always give a similar answer when I ask, "I dont know, I've gotten use to it, and I just eat soup and just soft foods. If anything I just try to tear my food with my gums"
Well let me tell you this, if you are one of the many that are gumming your food, its most likely your jaws (tempomandibular joint) is mostly likely damaged.
LETS TALK ABOUT IT!
I'll try explaining it simply. When you have all your of teeth, and you close down your jaws, your teeth will tell you how much you can close your lower jaw by. Now, if you lost all your teeth or most of your teeth - when you close down your lower jaws, there's nothing stopping your lower jaws to closing.
Now, when your lower jaw is closing more than it should be, I will say it as it is, you are damaging your jaw joint slowly, specifically the tempomandibular joint. Which has a specific cartilage, ligaments and tendons which is meant to close down to a certain anatomical range...
Do your jaws crack and click randomly? Do you feel pain within your jaws everyday? Do you have constant headaches? Well maybe its your jaw joint causing this pain - specifically the tempomandibular joint.
BUT, there is faith... with the appropriate oral health care provider, we can help you decrease these pains, and try to make your jaws better again. Starting off with a set of dentures, to see if we can minimize the pain. If pain persists, and there may be structural damage - then you would need to be referred to an oral surgeon for consultation.
